My family is watching this with me, which is rather odd to have to explain what's going on.

Oh yay, Jackie!

And of course, Gabriel! With little bits of Sylar shining through. 'Feudal', or 'futile'? Both make sense.

Niki and DL! Gasp! I like that! I like them more now. That's cool!

My close caption says "futile" for what it's worth.

Hiro demonstrates some powerful stuff here in the show - he uses his ability to learn English, do tasks, fold a thousand cranes

Gabriel seems a bit excessive in emphasis when talking about lions slaughtering gazelles and whatever else eating their young. From the way they're talking, this isn't the first set of tests, which would explain a lot of Gabriel's frustration.

I wonder if Hal has an ability? Or some past connection to the Company?

It occurs to me they've subverted the usual trope with these Niki and DL - she's strong and he's the invisible man (or phase guy, whatever).

That's odd - Gabriel forgot that he'd called Brian Davis. He had to reintegrate that memory! And I don't see anything remotely like reluctance or remorse as he goes for Brian's corpse.

It's weird to see Sylar wearing Gabriel's clothes in this scene with Chandra.

So that's the episode! Great one!

I think Gabriel has some messed up ideas about what is 'right/wrong' in terms of nature and killing. Animals kill and it's acceptable because they do it to survive as a way of life - humans even blow it off or add some human moral, "survival of the fittest," which Gabriel is…interested in (not sure if he believes it deep-down). But when humans kill, it is rarely ever considered natural, except in cases of self-defense or war. It's...all a matter of his perspective and I think the original set up for Gabriel's character is going the animal route. It could be his poor morals in self-justification for his/others' actions, or just emotionally avoidant and immature (boys liking violence without knowing/understanding that it is bad and harmful). Oddly enough, I think it's both self-justification and emotional avoidance/immaturity.

His pause at seeing Brian could be several things: he's distracted/busy/absorbed with his watches; he genuinely had a dissociative moment (like Gabriel didn't call, Sylar did - unlikley IMO, but possible); or it's just a writer's-moment to show the audience what went on, even though it was rather uncessary.

I never really noticed. I consider it fairly poor adjustment, socialization, or just a really emotional blurt moment (and granted Gabriel seems better? different at it than Sylar at least) - I mean, it's a fairly big leap and a fairly personal topic all of a sudden:
Chandra "If the soul exists, scientifically speaking, it exists in the brain."
Gabriel "When I was a kid, I used to wish some stranger would come and tell me that my family wasn't really my family..."

That's so bizarre, the Japanese phrasebook.

I think when Nathan gets quiet (and sometimes distractedly agreeable) when he argues with Peter, that's a sign he's lying and going to do whatever he wants or feels is best. Peter still buys it. Yet after whatever commitment, he still very much does not want to be in that fight, in between his family and loyalties as he perceives them - because his ability acts up in the convertable. The balance between eldest son (obedient with very little questions asked) and much younger son (rebellious and desperate to be different) is interesting here - cliche, or at least sticking to the natural pattern in a believable way.

Nathan's reaction is fear when Peter apparently just 'knows' about the other car.

I love how I can't tell if Peter agrees to testify for Nathan or just because - there's a tiny pause before he agrees and he was against it before, just now he was saying "they won't give up," so he could have changed his mind.

Another strange exchange:
Chandra "These tests aren't 100%"
Gabriel "Don't give up on me."
Chandra "There are other opportunities I need to focus on."

And this is so unspecific. Typical vagueness yet also waiting to be fulfilled in later seasons perhaps:
Noah "What happens when you do figure it out?"
Chandra "Give people hope for the future. That's your daughter's destiny."

Interesting that they decided to show this scene prior to Jessica's emergence. Say what you will, but I understand her better and her reasons better than, say, Sylar's. Jessica does it out of a misguided (?) desire to protect her family.

Matt thinks very poorly of himself. Directing traffic for 11 years isn't easy.

Petey in a suit! And the hair! I still love it. The shirt looks huge on him (one of Nathan's hand-me-downs? Why wouldn't he have a shirt that fits). Peter is speechless, trying to say something but his emotions are all over. (Nathan's eyebrows need a trim).

So Hiro kind of 'lost' Charlie twice…

I always thought Chandra was afraid of this new 'Sylar' in their last scene. Now I see he's kind of in awe and inspired. I like both.
